Left Handed Guitars FAQs
If I'm left handed, do I have to play a left handed guitar?
No, you don't. In fact, a lot of left handers play right handed guitars. It's always worth trying out playing right handed to begin with, as you will have more choice of guitars down the road if you learn that way. Playing guitar is a two-handed skill, so you will need to train both hands to perform very dextrous movements either way.
Some left handed guitarists, though, will never be comfortable on a right handed guitar. The main difference is between what each hand will be doing. On a standard guitar, the left hand will be fretting notes on the neck, while the right hand will be picking or strumming the strings down by the body. Some left handed people actually prefer to use their dominant left hand for the more intricate work of fretting, while some prefer to use their dominant hand to hold down the rhythm of picking and strumming. The best advice is to try both and see which suits you best.
What are the most popular left handed guitars?
The most popular left-handed guitars are largely the same as the most popular right handed guitars, as they are basically mirror images of each other. The Les Paul, Stratocaster and Telecaster models are all well-loved by lefties, as are classic acoustic body shapes like the dreadnought, concert and jumbo models.
Often, left-handers favour guitars with symmetrical body shapes such as the Gibson SG or Flying V, or guitars without a cutaway. While left handed versions of these guitars exist, part of the appeal for lefties is that the right handed versions of these guitars can be modified to play as left handed.
