    Beginners Guitars FAQS

What are the best guitars for beginners?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best beginner guitar will suit your style, feel comfortable to play and help you feel motivated. Doing some research into the sound, body shape and playability will go a long way in helping you make the right choice.

Should I choose an electric or acoustic guitar as a beginner?
This depends on what kind of music you want to play and how you want to learn.

Electric guitars are often easier to play than acoustic or classical guitars, thanks to their lighter strings and smaller necks. They also offer more versatility in terms of sound, especially when paired with an amplifier or effects. Just bear in mind that they will require some extra gear to get started.

Acoustic guitars give you a rich, natural sound and they don’t require any additional equipment. However, they can be slightly harder to play with at first, especially for younger players with smaller hands.

How can I learn the guitar as a beginner?
Nowadays, there are plenty of online tutorials, videos and apps available to help you get started on your own; many beginners will be able to play simple chords and songs within a few months. However, online resources can’t correct mistakes or guide your technique. As you progress, working with a music teacher is the way to go as they can help you build skills faster with tailored lessons and constructive feedback.

If you want to find out for yourself, we offer a free one-to-one trial lesson at Rimmers Music School. If you’ve ever wanted to learn an instrument it’s worth a go and could end up changing your life.

How do I know which size to buy?
Finding the best ‘fit’ for your guitar is really important for any guitar player. If you get this part wrong, if it's too big, too small or too heavy, it can affect your performance. For full information and guidance on choosing the right size for you, we suggest you take a look at our guitar size buying guide.

Do I need any accessories with my beginner guitar?
If you’re buying a beginner electric guitar, you’ll need a few extras to get started. At the very least, you’ll need an amplifier and a cable to connect to your guitar, while other helpful accessories include a strap, tuner, plectrums (picks) and a gig bag for safe storage.
