Do You Really Need Music Lessons?

So you want to learn an instrument, or learn to sing? Where do you begin?

In this ever-advancing world, we have a wealth of information at our fingertips. We can find out the weather forecast, have our shopping delivered and watch movies wherever we go. Learning to play an instrument is a very fun and popular hobby which can develop into a career.

Whenever a customer purchases an instrument we always make a point to offer them a free lesson in our music school. After all, whether they have spent £20 or £2000+ it’s in their interest to get the best from it. Some customers adopt a pragmatic approach and intend to self-teach, choosing to while away the hours with just themselves and their instrument of choice. Others prefer to use the oh so popular Youtube streaming site to either watch online tutorials or try to emulate their idols efforts. Then there’s the pure and simple tutor book – a veritable feast of information which will illustrate to them how to become the master of their chosen instrument. The list goes on.

So what do i think? I’ve been a musician for over 40 years and despite everything have tried almost every teaching format going. You see all of the above ideas are great, they give people inspiration to start a new instrument and the tools are there to help them progress – but only with the correct guidance, and this is why actual lessons are important.

Just because you can see something being done it doesn’t mean that you can do it. Youtube, books etc are all great to refer to, but they all have serious flaws. They don’t listen to you nor do they talk back to you. A real music teacher will ensure that you’re using the correct technique when learning to ensure that you are able to progress correctly and at the best pace for you. You can ask them questions during your lesson and receive the correct answer straight away.  There are Exams available which are an official recognition of your achievement.. they show that you have attained a grade and are very popular. We have excellent rates of success. Learning and progressing isn’t something that should be rushed and everybody learns at different rates however our teachers know this and adapt lessons for each individual based upon their own abilities.

You may think that lessons are expensive? Our time is precious and during your lesson, you will gain a wealth of information in a short period of time. Try giving your free time a value, how about £5/hour? Even at this rate if you spend an evening trying to learn via a method other than one of our teachers it could cost £20 of your time with no knowledge of whether you’re learning correctly and nobody there to tell you otherwise. Eventually, you could find that you’ve invested a lot of time and effort and that you’re not progressing or simply don’t understand what you’re trying to learn. Sadly this can lead to frustration and eventually people adopting this form of learning usually end up giving it up as “It’s not for me”.

If you’re not sure whether to have lessons we offer a free one to one lesson in our music school. If you’ve ever wanted to learn an instrument it’s worth a go and could end up changing your life.
