Taking Care Of Your Drums

Hello!

In this brief post, I will be talking about some of the best and easiest ways of keeping your drums looking and more importantly sounding their best.

First thing, may seem a simple one but keep your drums clean of dust and grime, especially by the inside of the rims, as this can cause bacteria to form that can corrode away at the chrome rims and even eat away at the drum skins if left for long periods of time.

Staying in the same area, your drum skins are vitally important to the feel and play of your kit. While some players will never change their skins, as they enjoy the sound of worn-in drum heads, the majority of drummers will change them as most prefer that fresh alive tone of new skins. While it is very much a case of how often the kit is played, and the preferred tone of the kit in regards to physically changing the skins, it is very important to check the tuning of the heads. This is especially important of using the kit for touring or studio use.

The final thing to mention on this topic is caring for your cymbals. A recommendation I make to any drummer is to invest in a cymbal carry bags if ever moving the cymbals, as it only takes one small mishap to cause a chip or crack that can spread across the whole cymbal. It is also important to lye cymbals down if they are not on stands. This prevents there being to much pressure on the bottom edge of the cymbal and it warping, as this can effect the tone. Also, if placing cymbals on top of one another, place a cloth of piece of fabric between them to prevent the grooves from rubbing and wearing away, and again disrupting the tone. And just as we mentioned with the drums, it is a must to keep your cymbals clean. There are numerous great suitable products available for cleaning and polishing cymbals that won’t contain any harmful elements to their sound or integrity. It is always a good idea to read the instructions with each product as there are a lot of different types of cleaners, including some that need to be left for a short while after application, and some that need instantly washing off, so be careful which one you use.

I hope this post has given some helpful tips to keep your kit looking and sounding as fresh as your music, and if you have any questions on drums, please get in touch with us here at Rimmers!

Keep playing and have fun with it!!
