Handy Tips For Composing Music

Composing a song can be a very daunting task, you may have an idea, melody or riff that comes to your head and it sounds great, but you can’t get it to fit into a structure of a song or get it to link into another section. Hitting obstacles such as writer’s block can be extremely off-putting as well but sometimes that is a sign to take a step away for a couple of days. When writing a piece of music it is important for it to flow and listen well, similar to a story. You would expect a well-written story to keep you interested and entertained throughout it and writing a song is no different in my opinion. Whenever I have written a song I try and stick to these 2 golden rules that in my opinion have made the process of writing my 2 albums a lot easier.
-
DON’T FOCUS TOO MUCH ON ONE SONG
If you are writing an album it can be very easy to be tangled up within one particular piece. You don’t want to have to come back to it at a later date so it almost feels like your rushing it for the sake of it being finished. The answer for this is to move on and come back to it at a later date.

DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT THE SONG TO BE ABOUT BEFORE YOU EVEN START WRITING THE SONG
This may not be as easy as I am making it sound but the reason why this is important is that for the lyrics to flow with the song, the music has to flow with the lyrics. So if you decide what you want your song to be about when you’re writing the music then you will make it a lot easier for yourself in terms of structure, musical content and lyrical content. For me, that is similar to playing the drums without drumsticks or a guitar without strings. I need that focus of what I know the message will be in the song so then I don’t need to worry about how my music will fit with the lyrics.
These 2 rules helped me improve my composition skills and hopefully will help you along the way.
