guitar pedal

A guitar pedal sometimes referred to as an effects pedal are small electronic units that alter the sound of a guitar in a specific way. They are specifically used to produce special effects such as distortion, fuzz, chorus and much more.  Depending on the guitar pedal that you have, it is possible to control the volume, equalization and other aspects regarding the tone of your guitar. There are so many pedals available that you would be able to produce just about any type of special effect that you wish.

So, whether you want to purchase an effects pedal as a gift for somebody else, or maybe you want to treat yourself and really develop your skills then you must know what effect pedals do and which one you should be purchasing.

Distortion Pedals

The most widely used pedal is the distortion pedal. What this pedal basically does is distorts the signals by adding crunch, sustain and volume to the sound which is the opposite of the natural sound that you tend to hear. Think of a really great rock song that you love, the chorus more than likely will have an awesome solo that is created using distorted sound. A distortion pedal responds to a guitar differently depending on which one you are using.

In simple terms, a reverb pedal gives an echo effect that sounds as though it bounces off the walls and reflects in the air until silent. There are many different reverb pedals available on the market, depending on which area you are playing in there is something to suit everybody. Room, hall, spring and many more pedals dedicate themselves to creating particular effects.

Wah Pedals

Wah pedals are seen as an essential on many guitarists pedal boards, as they mimic a humans voice saying, as you probably guessed ‘Wah Wah’. The Wah is a classic sound of the 70s but remains hugely popular across genres today, it is used widely in rock solos and funk music to create a really unique sound when performing that retains the low-end definition and fullness. If you want to change the tone of the ‘Wah’ you can simply flip the rear-panel.

Overdrive Pedals

An overdrive pedal, without being overcomplicated, drives your guitar signal to push harder rather than changing the sound of it, it keeps as much of the original sound as possible but gives it a much thicker and heavier signal. An overdrive pedal is used to create effects that your amp can’t achieve without being too loud. Overdrives boost frequencies and diminish the bass and treble.
