How To Improve Your Guitar Playing Skills

Are you wanting to improve your guitar techniques? There is always room for improvement when playing an instrument, so the chances are you clicked on this blog because the answer is yes! As we are learning how to play an instrument we will pick up habits along the way that can cause our level of performance to slack. Therefore, you may be wondering if there a solution to this, and how do I improve the way I play?
1 – Record Yourself
A great way to motivate yourself is by recording yourself, we are very quick to pick out flaws in ourselves, therefore, when recording yourself, you can listen carefully to the things you like and dislike, and then you can pick out your strengths and weaknesses and therefore improve on the weaknesses to ensure you are improving along the way. A great way of listening back to yourself is by replaying at a low speed so you can easily identify any scratchy noises or inconsistency, it may be harder to hear at your normal speed, therefore, slowing it down will make it clearer for you.
2. Take Lessons
Now, this may seem like an obvious one, but taking guitar lessons can definitely contribute towards helping you improve. One-on-one interaction with a skilled teacher will help you to identify strengths and weaknesses and therefore will eliminate any flaws you may have which will, therefore, improve your strengths. Having the extra ears will most definitely help to hear things that you may not, which is essential if you want to get your skills up to scratch.
3. Change Your Strings
You should change your guitar strings after a few months, depending on how much you play as heavier strings can help your tone and the fingering strength, whereas lighter guitar strings suit bigger bends. Changing the strings may bring out the best in your guitar, it’s all about experimenting! However, changing the strings is not always a necessity it can rely on personal preference and some musicians prefer old strings whereas others love the sound of a new set of strings.
4. Play With Other Musicians
Of course, everybody plays the guitar differently, therefore playing the guitar with someone else can benefit the both of you as you will start to hear where each of you differ and how you can improve on faults and also encourage others to improve on strengths you already have. The other guitarist may have unique ways of creating rhythm that you can pick up on, and they may pick up on great skills that you show.
5. Be Confident
This is something that is built over time when performing, but having confidence is essential if you want to improve. Being proud of what you are performing will show and you will be able to hear the difference, as a passionate guitarist is more powerful than a shy, lacking confidence guitarist. Be yourself when performing, push your boundaries and be creative. You are brilliant and playing the guitar is what you do!
